Social Security Updates 2025: What Veterans Need to Know
Did you know that Veterans can receive both SSDI and VA disability benefits at the same time? Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) remains a crucial support system for veterans who are unable to work.
Starting April 14, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is introducing new identity verification procedures to help prevent fraud. These updates are part of broader reforms being implemented by the recently created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
What’s Changing?
If you’re applying for Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary benefits (like spouse or child benefits), you’ll now need to verify your identity either:
- Through a secure my Social Security online account, or
- In person at a Social Security field office.
If you can’t apply online, the SSA encourages you to call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an in-person appointment. This way, you can complete your claim and identity verification in a single visit.
Who’s Not Affected?
Not everyone needs to follow these new rules. The following applicants are exempt:
- SSDI, Medicare, or SSI applicants: You can still apply entirely by phone if you can’t use the online system or go to an SSA office.
- Current Social Security beneficiaries: If you’re already receiving benefits, you won’t need to go through the new identity verification process, unless you’re updating your direct deposit information.
- Dire-need situations: Cases involving terminal illness or prisoner pre-release may qualify for special exceptions. The SSA is developing a formal process for these, including required documentation and management approval.
Understanding SSDI and Veterans’ Eligibility
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides crucial financial support for veterans unable to maintain substantial employment due to medical conditions. This federal program operates independently from VA disability benefits, creating opportunities for veterans to receive both forms of assistance.
Key SSDI Requirements for Veterans:
- Sufficient work credits earned through previous employment
- Medical condition preventing substantial work for 12+ months
- Monthly earnings below $1,620 (2025 threshold)
- Condition meets SSA’s disability criteria
