VA Claim Sharks Are Targeting Veterans: Here’s How to Spot Them
The VA disability system is already complicated enough without having to worry about who’s actually on your side. But some companies out there are making money off veterans who just want help getting the benefits they earned, and a few of them are doing it in ways that are arguably illegal.
Here’s what you need to know.
The basic rule most veterans don’t know.
Federal law prohibits anyone from charging you to help file an initial VA disability claim. Free, legitimate help exists through VA-accredited advocates and Veterans Service Organizations like the DAV or VFW. You should never have to pay upfront to get someone in your corner for an initial claim.
The problem is that enforcement is weak, and some companies have gotten creative about skirting the rules.

How claim sharks actually operate
The clearest recent example is Trajector Medical, which got hit with a major NPR investigation in 2025. Trajector’s pitch is that they review your medical records and build out “medical packets” to help establish service connection and disability severity. They call it a medical service, not claims help, that distinction is how they’ve tried to stay out of legal trouble.
What they were actually doing was running auto-dialers to monitor VA claim activity for veterans they’d worked with, tens of thousands of calls a month. When a veteran’s rating went up, they sent a bill. The fee: five times the monthly benefit increase, as a one-time charge.
Run those numbers. If your rating jumped from 90% to 100% in 2026, your monthly benefit goes up by about $1,576. Under Trajector’s model, that triggers an invoice for nearly $7,900. You’d owe that money for something you may not have even known you’d agreed to.
Trajector is the company that’s gotten the most press, but they’re not the only one operating this way.
What lawmakers are trying to do about it
There’s been some movement in Congress and at the state level, though none of it has fully landed yet.
Dozens of lawmakers wrote to the FTC and CFPB asking them to crack down on predatory claims companies. As of early May 2025, neither agency had responded. A bipartisan bill targeting the auto-dialer tactic is in the early stages. Another bill would reinstate penalties for charging veterans for initial claims help.
California passed a state law penalizing companies that charge for initial claims assistance. Meanwhile, Louisiana went the other direction, it passed a law in 2024 allowing fees up to $12,500 for that same service. A federal judge struck it down because it conflicted with federal law, but that could change if Congress acts first. The industry is actively lobbying for fee permissions at the federal level, so this isn’t a settled fight.

Who you actually want in your corner
VA-accredited advocates are vetted by the VA, trained on VA standards and procedures, bound by a code of ethics, and have direct access to the Veterans Benefits Management System. They can work your claim on your behalf without you navigating the system alone.
That accreditation matters because it’s verifiable. You can look anyone up on VA.gov before you sign anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone legally charge me to file a VA disability claim?
Under current federal law, no one can charge you for help filing an initial claim. Some companies frame their services as medical consulting rather than claims assistance to get around this, but that’s exactly the gray area lawmakers are trying to close.
I already signed something with one of these companies. What now?
Don’t pay anything until you’ve talked to a VA-accredited advocate. Depending on what the contract says and what was actually done, you may have options, especially if their practices crossed a legal line.
How do I verify that someone is actually VA-accredited?
Check VA.gov directly. Accreditation records are public and searchable. If a company won’t point you straight to their VA.gov record, that’s a red flag.
